The doctor says we have, at most, 5 weeks to go and then we get to meet these sweet little girls, and our life will never be the same. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZdXA1kQRjMJJt68lKkKMe3nNHf_kk_QYr_2dLpiJ0kvp9d8CXKP6agYm5wmY-YnL4ouM-wpSeEe5_iWC04ay1N2bSQiNjdhYJCTpRJLqt0p2MTmmQe1HLBPvDGrVfv6_q4moPEy6hk4g/s1600/P1050572.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZdXA1kQRjMJJt68lKkKMe3nNHf_kk_QYr_2dLpiJ0kvp9d8CXKP6agYm5wmY-YnL4ouM-wpSeEe5_iWC04ay1N2bSQiNjdhYJCTpRJLqt0p2MTmmQe1HLBPvDGrVfv6_q4moPEy6hk4g/s1600/P1050572.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Everything I have read regarding twin pregnancies says be prepared early. You get big and heavy fast and this can lead to you having a hard time getting things prepared, not to mention I had a big fear that I would be put on bed rest...so far I'm doing great and still working 6 hour days! Since the advice is get things ready early that is just what we did.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia1Hb0kEkaobXI4_UEmR28fznO1pJ5O1Vn7O4Zl_pHy8KG_pK5Uvp56CFcHawEzhAz9Ict514GUnMUE0-lurKxgRLY-zj5IG16_TZHZap2nCXkR3RAY3aDmq4B9Sr1GbV3XTsPhDB1fLQ/s1600/P1050589.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia1Hb0kEkaobXI4_UEmR28fznO1pJ5O1Vn7O4Zl_pHy8KG_pK5Uvp56CFcHawEzhAz9Ict514GUnMUE0-lurKxgRLY-zj5IG16_TZHZap2nCXkR3RAY3aDmq4B9Sr1GbV3XTsPhDB1fLQ/s1600/P1050589.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a>Before we knew the genders of these little ones we knew we wanted something gender neutral for their nursery. If we had been having one baby we would not have found out gender, but since it is twins we wanted to know to be more prepared. (No one likes buying you gender neutral clothes.) So our gender neutral theme is: BOOKS. Since I work in early childhood education I have a TON of paperback books so I knew we would feature these.</div>
<br />
<br />
On Pinterest I saw many images of<a href="http://www.pinterest.com/offsite/?token=363-7&url=http%3A%2F%2F2.bp.blogspot.com%2F-qvKQFSqqLIw%2FTa4WeeZXAlI%2FAAAAAAAABhU%2FlkVU6baK-SU%2Fs1600%2Fb5.jpg&pin=207024914094634517"> book ledges</a> being used in children's rooms. I decided I wanted book ledges so I could feature all my books and keep them safe until our twins grew to care for them. So my dad got to work making them using this<a href="http://www.chiclittlehouse.com/2010/08/inviting-entryway-updated.html"> tutorial</a>. (I also had him make 2 for our living room to use as picture ledges.) We framed the bedroom window with 4 ledges on each side, 36" long and 15" apart. There are at least 3-4 books behind each book you see on the ledge...I have A LOT of books!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfe277QDIwh_mpG5a11zHtqHo4Zk4-12FmihQTkXPGwNgtLh4wrmXEcpX8DS8ZSm5pLaKWihr6kRkVb9segiApnrJvHwgAPjpACjcIvixEQd_-nq2geY64S-m2C9GNiZwzrePQis4SrTM/s1600/P1050578.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfe277QDIwh_mpG5a11zHtqHo4Zk4-12FmihQTkXPGwNgtLh4wrmXEcpX8DS8ZSm5pLaKWihr6kRkVb9segiApnrJvHwgAPjpACjcIvixEQd_-nq2geY64S-m2C9GNiZwzrePQis4SrTM/s1600/P1050578.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We didn't paint the room since it was already a neutral and calming color from when it was our bedroom and I wanted simple window treatments. We bought a cheap roller shade at Lowes and I added ribbon and rick-rack trim to jazz it up a bit. For the valance I simply wrapped a few yards of sheer navy fabric around the curtain rod. Below our window is a simple toy shelf: a storage cube unit purchased at Target with Ikea legs so that it could sit above the heat/A/C vent.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1R2Tv3HuNBPxq04-h3FcdHq4X_N9fvy3Ftk048tMrqmyIvRtkOiokFvIlDcFiWLIXz1J8eS10VW8OLNu3kRm2NW-deYzNbWPayx-oKZ6gMyOBp2HgFAc4lrTr70uKWn228H5w1mluwWA/s1600/P1050569.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1R2Tv3HuNBPxq04-h3FcdHq4X_N9fvy3Ftk048tMrqmyIvRtkOiokFvIlDcFiWLIXz1J8eS10VW8OLNu3kRm2NW-deYzNbWPayx-oKZ6gMyOBp2HgFAc4lrTr70uKWn228H5w1mluwWA/s1600/P1050569.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also fell in love with alphabet collage walls I had seen floating around on the internet such as<a href="http://www.chiclittlehouse.com/2010/08/inviting-entryway-updated.html"> this one </a>and wanted to feature the alphabet on one of the walls. This was the first thing I did in the nursery, weeks before we knew they were girls. For the letters I wanted to stick to things that started with that letter for the ones I put together, such as tree branches for the letter 'T' and a ruler for the letter 'I' (inches) and the 'M' is covered in a map of Nebraska. I found a lot of great deals on random letters at craft stores and online, others my family helped me piece together such as a $1 'R' my Aunt found at Goodwill. <br />

Since our dresser is so short we wanted something a little taller for the days my mom watches the girls. She is helping us out with childcare costs by altering her nursing schedule and caring for them Tuesdays and Thursdays. Not only does the changing table save her back, it also provides more storage space for cloth diapers (I know we are crazy!). My dad fixed the shelf and drawer on this Craigslist find, then painted it white to match the rest of the furniture and updated the drawer knobs. I wish I had a before picture, it looks so much better now. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I made a <a href="http://asmallsnippet.com/2013/09/diy-changing-pad-cover.html">cover </a>out of JoAnns fabric for our changing pad and added a shelf above the table for wipes and cream, this was left over wood we used in finishing the basement. The final touch was our book mobile that I created after seeing <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/154743021/the-tale-of-squirrel-nutkin-beatrix">this one</a> on Etsy. I used mini Little Golden Books from my childhood along with a dissected and pieced together <i>Pokey Little Puppy</i>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
For our cribs we went with mini-cribs purchased from Target. These were cheaper and will convert to Twin size beds when the girls are toddlers. These are a real space saver for us, unfortunately standard crib sheets don't fit so I got to make my own. :) I used this <a href="http://prudentbaby.com/2011/01/baby-kid/crib-sheet-tutorial-part-2-2/">tutorial </a>to make the blue chevron sheets and another set in grey with white polka dots. For the crib skirt I searched <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1081005">Spoonflower for book fabric and came across this</a> which is perfect with the books and owls! I splurged on this custom fabric and bought a few yards then used a straight panel for the front of the cribs with dark grey Kona on the sides. I attached it with tape, :) and as we lower the cribs I can adjust the length of the skirts. The left over fabric is folded in my stash to use for twin size quilts when our girls move into big kid beds. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQVh-BtkLeJ1X_19OdmFfFmEXvq8Yr9OfA1IyQVqX5SEc1xeP5WMtpgCY3z49za0dJE070QBaEytTCQWPG6jEhnh7nTUAKxtKSKADpp-5oj_i8KiMNfM8lr7J8JdROjSwjcKGWWLG2VD0/s1600/P1050574.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQVh-BtkLeJ1X_19OdmFfFmEXvq8Yr9OfA1IyQVqX5SEc1xeP5WMtpgCY3z49za0dJE070QBaEytTCQWPG6jEhnh7nTUAKxtKSKADpp-5oj_i8KiMNfM8lr7J8JdROjSwjcKGWWLG2VD0/s1600/P1050574.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The shelf between the cribs was a $10 purchase that I fixed up by painting the top and sides a turquiose blue to match the owl fabric and storage baskets on the changing table. This fits board books and small stuffed toys/puppets. Just above the cribs and shelf I stenciled 'Once upon a time...' To make this I printed the letters from our computer then cut them out and traced them onto the wall with a pencil. Once I had everything up and level I filled the pencil lines in with leftover grey paint from our basement. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE7TmwZu2XYghk1zleu41FcmDaHlnK27EsTuxfQnfabFOqbVw_ITKIVZzbXI1VEnH6jOIgVCzwtQMqzX5WAMSNN_Obb48d943R_MWY14afcIbLt_4eKSQUWmYtH6aGDy56dCJS80kRoN4/s1600/P1050573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE7TmwZu2XYghk1zleu41FcmDaHlnK27EsTuxfQnfabFOqbVw_ITKIVZzbXI1VEnH6jOIgVCzwtQMqzX5WAMSNN_Obb48d943R_MWY14afcIbLt_4eKSQUWmYtH6aGDy56dCJS80kRoN4/s1600/P1050573.JPG" height="240" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
A few finishing touches in the nursery were added to go with the book theme. I put some stuffed book characters all with their books around the room. My three favorites: <i>Where The Wild Things Are</i>, <i>The Lorax</i> and the Llama, Llama series are featured. The frames on the shelves will hold photos of the girls once they're born and we will spell their name out in blocks on each shelf as well. (We do have names picked out, but we aren't sharing, both sets of grandparents aren't too happy about this!)<br />

We didn't keep track of our budget but I know it was on the low end for decorating this nursery. I think this is a room that will grow with our girls for several years too. When we convert the cribs to beds the dresser will get housed in the closet for extra play space. Our house is on the small side, but I think it will work until they are 8 years old or so. Then who knows, we may need to move to a bigger home or follow their likes and re-decorate. I'm so anxious for their arrival. Everything is ready, just waiting for them!<br />

Then it was set aside. Then I got it back out <a href="http://craftycandace.blogspot.com/2013/04/keeping-busy.html">over a year later</a>, put the quilt top and back together and then set it aside once more. Last summer I pulled it out of the closet and made the <a href="http://craftycandace.blogspot.com/2013/07/quilt-food.html">quilt sandwich</a>, intending to quilt it slow and steady until it was finished. However my free motion pebble quilting was taking FOREVER and the other projects added up so it was folded up on my quilting table and buried under other projects. That is until this spring, I was determined to finish it!<br />

Each color block is made up of 36-2" squares of a particular color. These blocks were cut by me and then sent to quilting bee members to be pieced together along with a signature block for the back. I encouraged them to swap out squares for their own scraps and was treated with a few added color blocks including a favorite on one of the red blocks...a red house. :)<br />
<br />

<br />
The white blocks between the colored blocks sandwiched in a square of colorful circle prints. I wanted them to be square obviously to go with the other squares but since I planed to do pebble quilting I wanted to incorporate circles too. I love this addition and the variety of circle designs and sizes in the different prints. For the binding I went with a circle print as well. The colors of the circles match the colors of the square blocks almost exact!<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyUrEFxGMzCMm6z8u26wNa93eOVU5LXO3yWrXzFsIzZZMaBt1KCcgpYmA-nuzn1mAvZYzI6BEPROd-MFkPaYLfayasGu5MlSMgNwA0eHEwGi4AkOmtRAgovLM7A3KKrx3UDMpJKYR0sLA/s1600/P1050553.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyUrEFxGMzCMm6z8u26wNa93eOVU5LXO3yWrXzFsIzZZMaBt1KCcgpYmA-nuzn1mAvZYzI6BEPROd-MFkPaYLfayasGu5MlSMgNwA0eHEwGi4AkOmtRAgovLM7A3KKrx3UDMpJKYR0sLA/s1600/P1050553.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the back of the quilt I did a dark grey background and put the corresponding signature block behind the quilt block. I love the back for the simplicity and texture of the quilting. <br />
<br />
For the quilting I did the pebble design and I changed the color of thread to match the color of the block. This was very time consuming...both the dense quilting and rotating colors with each square. This was the reason it sat on my quilting table for so long. I did not enjoy the quilting process of pebbles. This spring I decided to get it into gear and finish this sucker up. As I quilted I discovered a short cut: when I finished a color block and moved on to the white block and thread I did two white blocks then two color blocks. This saved time on switching thread colors. Although the quilting was time consuming it was worth it for the texture and color definition you see on the back!<br />

Since I had this colorful quilt finished by summer I knew I wanted to use it for the maternity pictures we had done. We took it along to our photo shoot and did a family shot on it with the columns that we were married at behind us.<br />

I loved our photographer, <a href="http://www.nelliesmithphotography.com/">Nellie Smith</a>, and encourage anyone in the Lincoln, NE area to use her for your photography needs! Her prices are unbeatable too. :)<br />
<br />
What I learned from this quilt: keep at it! Quilting got easier and became faster as I went, plus I learned my wonderful short cut. :)<br />
Now this quilt lives in our basement on our comfy couch. With the heat and humidity rolling in this is becoming my favorite place as we wind down this twin pregnancy!Candace:http://www.blogger.com/profile/14385583925168941189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5219616912833611768.post-38240840073990938122014-06-20T20:48:00.000-05:002014-06-20T20:48:02.343-05:00Finish it up FridayHere is a small finish I had this week. She loved this small gift, stating "these are our colors!" I pulled the color pallet from a fat quarter I had of<a href="http://www.wintercreekcloth.com/2wenty-Thr3e-Cameras-Mustard_p_1842.html"> Mustard Cameras fabric from the 2wenty Thr3e line</a>.<br />

I embroidered 'His' and 'Hers' rather than 'Mr' and 'Mrs' because they were married in an informal commitment ceremony rather than a big extravagant wedding, and it is more their style.<br />

For the back I used a grey dot fabric, scraps I had left over from sheets I made for the girls' cribs.<br />
<br />
Our nursery is pretty custom, I hate to buy the stuff at the stores...plus in my opinion the crib sets are a waste of money. All you can use is the crib skirt and sheet, plus we ended up purchasing two mini cribs rather then full size cribs so for us those are worthless because they would be WAY too big! I plan to post a blog about the nursery soon, just waiting on my dad to finish making us some book ledges. :)<br />
<br />
For now I am in the process of getting our queen size bed quilt quilted. My job tomorrow is to baste it, which involves a 29-week-pregnant-with-twins woman to crawl around on the kitchen floor as I pin this monster of a quilt. Let's just say I am finally starting to get uncomfortable, I feel huge (two weeks ago I was measuring the same as a 37 week pregnant woman!). I have this quilt, then our girls' quilts to work on...9 weeks to go to get it all done!! :) Thank goodness I am working 6 hour shift days rather than 8 now, I can rest enough to get this stuff finished!Candace:http://www.blogger.com/profile/14385583925168941189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5219616912833611768.post-25744016736841202332014-06-08T17:42:00.000-05:002014-06-08T22:48:15.435-05:00Babies, BabiesAs my friend <a href="http://diariesofdomesticbliss.blogspot.com/">Cristy </a>likes to remind me and my close friends, "There will be 4 new babies in a matter of months!" My friend Jess is first, her daughter is due one month after her first born Payton turns one: the end of July.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzPn2WD04qDhy8KdYF7nksl_IwkZnZrmZuCUSFUco-1Ttay1yWNQEJDIpKcMJ5SvURUj4_e7PTTW8vO1CeDQJAj40U1subfyQGOPiUWk-A7ELFbkaeTiVkc5trZnrqSkExJ6bizlUrjkE/s1600/P1050378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzPn2WD04qDhy8KdYF7nksl_IwkZnZrmZuCUSFUco-1Ttay1yWNQEJDIpKcMJ5SvURUj4_e7PTTW8vO1CeDQJAj40U1subfyQGOPiUWk-A7ELFbkaeTiVkc5trZnrqSkExJ6bizlUrjkE/s1600/P1050378.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For her baby quilt I followed the interests of Jess on her nursery pin board on pinterest (so helpful!) to create a quilt to go with her teal and coral nursery theme. It was a pretty simple quilt to make, I cut 5 inch squares for a finished quilt of 36" x 40" (or so). I was in a hurry to finish this quilt so for the quilting I did diagonal straight line quilting. It was also practice for my bed quilt, I wanted to make sure I could stay straight before doing a queen size!<br />
I had a lot of fun picking out fat quarters at my favorite local quilt shop to make this one, the color scheme is so fun! While there I ran into one of the owners, Rick, who was very excited to here my news about twins on the way. He then went on to tell me about someone he knows with twins...it seems EVERYONE knows someone with twins and has to share the story. :)<br />

Next up in the line up of 4 new babies are my own girls due Sep. 3rd. When we found out we were having twins instead of a singleton we were shocked, and I quickly looked for resources at the library and via internet. One thing I have read several times is that when it comes to twins strangers have no filter (as well as well meaning friends/family/co-workers). For example a co-worker has pointed out since I was about 15 weeks, "Man, you're getting big. You're going to be huge!" ...Yes, I will be! When grocery shopping Lee and I make bets on how many strangers are going to ask, "So, when are you due?", of course at 27 weeks I measure the same as a 37 week pregnant woman with one (singleton). I have a way to go, and I'm OK with that; the bigger I get the bigger my girls get which means they will be healthy when they're born, hopefully the end of August. However, then we will be on display when out with the girls...so I guess I'll just get used to it. As one woman said regarding her twins, "Being a mother of twins is like being a circus side show. You're big during the 3rd trimester, then people are in awe of your two sweet babies." I'm so excited for my girls to be here and I will learn to be open to strangers admiring our girls. :)<br />

<br />
Last in the baby line up is my friend Mandy's second born. She is due one week after me! Her house in Colorado is being renovated, plus her mom stays with her family 6 months out of the year, so baby #2 won't have a nursery for his/her first few months. However she did let me know when big brother Patrick moves to his bedroom downstairs the baby will be getting a grey nursery with gender specific accents. Since we don't know what baby #2 is I went with grey fabrics and then used some colorful strips of scraps down the length of the quilt. I outlined the strips with 1/2" and 1" boarders of white so the colors would pop next to the dark grey. Again, I was in a hurry to finish this quilt so I did random straight line quilting with light and dark grey threads.<br />
<br />

<br />
For both their quilts I used solid flannel for the backing, coral for Jess and light grey for Mandy. I have used this a few times in the past, <a href="http://craftycandace.blogspot.com/2013/06/pinwheels-in-central-park.html">once for Payton's baby quilt</a>. Jess informed me that she loved using this quilt for tummy time because the flannel backing kept the quilt in place on the carpet. I was really excited to here that the flannel had enough tack to keep it in place and will be using it for the back of my own baby quilts too!<br />

I was really excited to use my new quilt label technique on these quilts too. I ordered a silk screen from a shop on Etsy, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/150415829">Smudged Textiles</a>. First I made the template then submitted it to the owner, she quickly turned it into a silk screen and sent it to me. I love how easy it is to use this and how the label doesn't distract you from the quilt backing! <br />

It was completely improvised, which was a first for me and I had so much fun with the freedom, not to mention nerves of "what if it sucks!?" <br />
<br />

<br />
This was a quilt for a <a href="http://fruvellhoff.blogspot.com/">friend</a>'s third and final baby. Her oldest boys' quilts are <a href="http://craftycandace.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html">here </a>and <a href="http://craftycandace.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html">here</a>. With baby #2 we were all sure it would be a girl...I used a charm pack of <a href="http://www.twiddletails.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=95_196">Sherbet Pips</a> for the quilt, including the pink tones thinking just maybe we'd all be right and they would have a little girl. Although I think this is still a neutral quilt, I do feel bad for MR. Ryker that he ended up with a slightly feminine quilt. :) Although, these friends are not the type to car at all.<br />
<br />
I wanted this quilt to be neutral, but with bits of pink and purple, because even boys can like these colors. I started making it at a time that I was organizing my scraps in my office/craft room and I discovered SO MANY scraps that needed to be used up, plus a ton of tan/beige fabric. I wanted to try out piecing together a block to make a shape after being inspired by Penny's work at <a href="http://sewtakeahike.typepad.com/sewtakeahike/">Sew Take a Hike,</a> so I got to work on creating a tree with a bicycle. I loved it. Notice the little bird in the tree too?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7ZgbY93uHx0QCvYU034Egfpv9W3XB2bduk4u32lVsu2aytCBIvwr-IiYScu-UGL31GpDKo8ClDeeke9PZotMWcPjUisZeaQyRrpfv99wBmqEijqiMcogrz7d5YeQ02B6bjGyt6a4yih0/s1600/P1040008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7ZgbY93uHx0QCvYU034Egfpv9W3XB2bduk4u32lVsu2aytCBIvwr-IiYScu-UGL31GpDKo8ClDeeke9PZotMWcPjUisZeaQyRrpfv99wBmqEijqiMcogrz7d5YeQ02B6bjGyt6a4yih0/s1600/P1040008.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next I went in search of fabric to use and add to this quilt and I found these at a local fabric store. I was really lucky to find the tree fabric from the Critter Community line. The trees were perfect to go with my pieced tree block, and the recycle fabric would go great with my theme of using scraps to make this quilt.<br />

<br />
I cut out some trees in a wonky style, then started to piece on scraps using<a href="http://comfortstitching.typepad.co.uk/comfortstitching/2011/04/crazy-scrappy-block-tutorial-and-a-maybe-quilt-a-long.html"> Aneela Hoey's tutorial</a>. Other than looking here to see how to do this no other pattern or plan was in place for this quilt. Our office/craft room was a mess during this process as you can see below!<br />

I started to line up my tree blocks on the design wall as I worked and when I felt they were finished I pulled out all the beige/tan fabric I could find and sorted them out into piles to create larger blocks for the quilt front. I included the recycle fabric for part of the front. The rest I have saved in my stash for a future project...not sure what (I love this fabric!).<br />

The back of the quilt is the Critter Community fabric I used to cut trees from, and the binding was left over scraps of binding from past quilts that I pieced together. So much of my stash was used in making this quilt and it felt great to get rid of pieces of fabric that were small but I didn't want to throw out. For the quilting I again stepped out of my comfort zone and did a tree bark quilting design with several knots on the quilt like the one below. <br />

This quilt may be one of my favorites! And I am very excited to meet the recipient (a GIRL!) in one week when her Momma, family, and my other wonderful friends and their children come to see me and throw me a BABY SHOWER!<br />

That's right, I am expecting...not one...but TWO BABIES!! Our twin girls will be here by the end of August. So you can imagine the lack of quilting and blogging that will soon be happening. (as if I have really done that great with blogging in the first place!) Also, the amount of projects I am trying to finish up before their arrival seems to be never ending! :) Two friends are pregnant with their 2nd child, plus a friend and old co-worker is due with baby #1 in December. I have A LOT of work to do this summer, more posts to come!Candace:http://www.blogger.com/profile/14385583925168941189noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5219616912833611768.post-54983541350707194042014-05-28T21:13:00.000-05:002014-05-30T17:36:15.404-05:00Vroom, Vroom 2Here is my commissioned quilt I finished last fall.<br />

<br />
A co-worker friend of mine was due with baby number two and wanted to make the transition to a big boy bed an exciting one for her two year old. Like many toddlers he loves transportation vehicles so she threw the idea of a twin sized quilt with cars and trains out for me and both of us got to brainstorming.<br />
I found many <a href="http://crafty-musings.blogspot.com/2013/04/vroom.html">quilts </a>and projects for inspiration, and she found a <a href="http://www.thelittlefabricshop.com/Products/vroom-quilt-squares-in-denim.aspx">vehicle fabric line</a> that went with the grey color scheme of her son and baby #2's room. Then I got to sketching a few layouts for the quilt and she relayed the idea to her husband. The only thing this fabric line was lacking was a train. So I decided I had to add a section with a train. I searched for more <a href="http://sticksonaplane.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/logans-train-quilt/">quilts </a>for inspiration and sketched a plan with a train added in. Mom and Dad loved the idea and I was super excited to add in an improvised panel for his quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ8bskwOnv_J_tDGKF6cI9iQZh54LK-p4E9wc7CppYOUmWQq2cu8CJtzCeOBTLfOimbtWy2R7tn5A34pdx3vfnZ0IyP_7NkG5O2DIXJE0eGCmEY6S01BYaXZ1LGp2HYLYpquJat0-NIaY/s1600/P1040146.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ8bskwOnv_J_tDGKF6cI9iQZh54LK-p4E9wc7CppYOUmWQq2cu8CJtzCeOBTLfOimbtWy2R7tn5A34pdx3vfnZ0IyP_7NkG5O2DIXJE0eGCmEY6S01BYaXZ1LGp2HYLYpquJat0-NIaY/s1600/P1040146.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The fabric she chose was so easy to piece together, all I needed to do was cut and stitch a few panels plus my train panel: a pieced together engine, 2 cars, and a caboose.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGS3B2rtFu-x4JDILQ3nrUT2Iipt-g7b6doGyOST-vGdIhoQP0f_B44HWRPqp6vdHpiOZ3jVJ4DQrU2ZX41r6_To2rd2bNEFtStaY5hlXkFQp_Blc9M11ifhA6FFXXHvPmLuZBYusySak/s1600/P1040140.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGS3B2rtFu-x4JDILQ3nrUT2Iipt-g7b6doGyOST-vGdIhoQP0f_B44HWRPqp6vdHpiOZ3jVJ4DQrU2ZX41r6_To2rd2bNEFtStaY5hlXkFQp_Blc9M11ifhA6FFXXHvPmLuZBYusySak/s1600/P1040140.JPG" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
She loved this grey fabric and wanted to make the quilt reversible for versatility so the back was simple to put together as well, which was great for me because my deadline for finishing it was a month...right before Lee and I left for Hawaii.<br />
<br />

<br />
I LOVED making this quilt (and getting paid for my hobby!) and learned how much fun it can be to collaborate with another person on creating a quilt. Although, I'm sure that can be difficult with some customers. :)<br />

In fact this was the first thing I ever sewed...and I was overwhelmed by the task of quilting it so I set it aside. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht_8vm1GCABsth3jbmuWZIRd2yMBBMylUL4SGlU_FNbCiEZ2WXF4ofz-YQxLklE0nIhqqLXL4h9wBjqSwBKBbWwbCQDUmXA2DhxDPZq0ZQ7_NHNnD4jXKl__KuglvDgwl2CiIzmqMHFBQ/s1600/IMG_20130921_232433_554.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht_8vm1GCABsth3jbmuWZIRd2yMBBMylUL4SGlU_FNbCiEZ2WXF4ofz-YQxLklE0nIhqqLXL4h9wBjqSwBKBbWwbCQDUmXA2DhxDPZq0ZQ7_NHNnD4jXKl__KuglvDgwl2CiIzmqMHFBQ/s400/IMG_20130921_232433_554.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My intention for this quilt was to make a queen sized bed quilt for our master bedroom. I fell in love with <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=momo+wonderland&client=firefox-a&hs=n1F&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&source=iu&imgil=cgdrV-24ddiAMM%253A%253Bhttps%253A%252F%252Fencrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com%252Fimages%253Fq%253Dtbn%253AANd9GcREYfvA_4yQHDPUNr4JrloikEChAQ4fZnatHKLfSrPsCOHv3eSi%253B507%253B338%253BAJheu5rbIVXkrM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fsewwithsass.blogspot.com%25252F2010%25252F04%25252Fon-rollat-least-for-now.html&sa=X&ei=MEvHUoupOYGK2gWukIDIBA&ved=0CEcQ9QEwBg&biw=1920&bih=950#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=cgdrV-24ddiAMM%3A%3BAJheu5rbIVXkrM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252F1.bp.blogspot.com%252F_X_Jan4rmWN4%252FS7yNX5C7ptI%252FAAAAAAAAAVE%252F9BBYO4nySks%252Fs1600%252Fmomo-wonderland.png%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fsewwithsass.blogspot.com%252F2010%252F04%252Fon-rollat-least-for-now.html%3B507%3B338">Wonderland by MoM</a>o and snagged a jelly roll and charm pack and got to work. I saw this log cabin configuration on the internet and thought, 'I could do that.' I set to work with a rotary cuter I bought....and a small cutting board....and no straight edge or ruler. I pieced my jaggedly cut fabric together on a very old sewing machine, one with HORRIBLE tension, and then I arranged the blocks into this configuration.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtn-pKEehOJE4a5fD7u63IeVN8SbCfltWHcKdaK-swysmHgWwK3lDMTjCPbAC8MiHi4llCMk8g4gTlSotHFFbzbywXY-oAdX3PRnu9sxJsVlL-uxPUREup8iaTHxdYHUkefgRCOkGb_Zs/s1600/P1050270.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtn-pKEehOJE4a5fD7u63IeVN8SbCfltWHcKdaK-swysmHgWwK3lDMTjCPbAC8MiHi4llCMk8g4gTlSotHFFbzbywXY-oAdX3PRnu9sxJsVlL-uxPUREup8iaTHxdYHUkefgRCOkGb_Zs/s400/P1050270.JPG" width="400" /></a> </div>
<br />
Being new to sewing I thought my jelly roll and charm pack would be enough for a queen size quilt...oh how naive I was! So another trip to my local quilt shop and I purchased additional yardage of <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/105931475/1-yard-wonderland-pepper-in-chai-by-momo?ref=sr_gallery_8&ga_search_query=momo+wonderland&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=supplies">MoMo's Pepper Chai</a> to make a boarder around the log cabin, as well as some yardage for the back of the quilt. I was smart enough at that time to ask for help in getting the yardage I would need, and asked for a layout of how to cut it. :) I'm sure Roxanne got a good laugh when I left. Especially when she saw the stitching and piecing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig4O5h9RJB4JA7MGcp2l-iSqNvUVNkF48hZKFlyDXCgtogg9zwZ5UVsTGpBURR01i0hCm4nPRPqLgCfU4LIiIpazLfaS4xlW-msohLT3wlVeASAk26D0xh78dRYXjKnGqPwL-AAb_5FMw/s1600/P1050254.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig4O5h9RJB4JA7MGcp2l-iSqNvUVNkF48hZKFlyDXCgtogg9zwZ5UVsTGpBURR01i0hCm4nPRPqLgCfU4LIiIpazLfaS4xlW-msohLT3wlVeASAk26D0xh78dRYXjKnGqPwL-AAb_5FMw/s400/P1050254.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Well once I finally got the whole quilt top finished I laid it on our bed and HATED it! So it got folded and put in a closet for a later day. That day has come and I have been busy cutting apart (the stitches were way too tight to get a seam ripper in there!) the blocks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6kvBflZ2Ld3TRR29r7AKb-gKyzB6AXquxRApoYh_0Adkgygl2v-rFTNphXd8gd6AG5ymRBTSSQynVSTHgT_k9ZCaRnYKyHJvbwMW3C87BmJ3V7iE-HtXEX3G7Eo5uzLF9M0HXcMdZUDE/s1600/P1050256.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6kvBflZ2Ld3TRR29r7AKb-gKyzB6AXquxRApoYh_0Adkgygl2v-rFTNphXd8gd6AG5ymRBTSSQynVSTHgT_k9ZCaRnYKyHJvbwMW3C87BmJ3V7iE-HtXEX3G7Eo5uzLF9M0HXcMdZUDE/s400/P1050256.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
With our basement finished and our bedroom downstairs now I had this quilt top in mind for our new room. Of course the piecing is horrible, and it is WAY too busy, so I have been dissecting and rearranging my pieces. The new quilt is going to be perfect. I found another charm pack awhile back and snagged it up before it was too late.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0xn0iuDo6fRTvzHC_GpKEz_I2WNYY2AT04TOg1sqe_m6IRBY3UMMON1ZV5oPyIKYpyvTtMXekl-MfTWU_yRA3spKkkAyZQbRYd7c_-PknRKqIDin1VW2E5P79k3KYz_JDenrnq1_Ye6I/s1600/P1050271.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0xn0iuDo6fRTvzHC_GpKEz_I2WNYY2AT04TOg1sqe_m6IRBY3UMMON1ZV5oPyIKYpyvTtMXekl-MfTWU_yRA3spKkkAyZQbRYd7c_-PknRKqIDin1VW2E5P79k3KYz_JDenrnq1_Ye6I/s400/P1050271.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now I'm in the process of making 462 five inch squares for this new quilt. I'm excited to have some blocks up on my design wall, but I know it is going to take <strike>some</strike> a LONG time. Unfortunately my husband isn't a fan of the fabric line...but once I finish the new quilt top and tone down the 'busy'ness (or as he calls it the 'Grandma' fabrics) I think he will <strike>learn to</strike> love it too.<br />
<br />

I have been sporadic in my posts for 2013 and 2012 wasn't much better. I'm not the type of person to make new year's resolutions, and when I do I don't keep them (like most other people!). For instance last year my resolution was to be able to do real pull ups by the end of the year. Well that didn't happen, but I did become a runner! <br />
<br />
2013 may not have been the year for pull ups, but it was the year for exciting changes for my family.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>2 half marathons and many personal bests in shorter races</li>
<li>Both Lee and I became the healthiest we've been in a long time (for me in my life)</li>
<li>I started a job that I LOVE</li>
<li>Our basement is finished!</li>
<li>We went to Hawaii (first time in an ocean, and taking a BIG trip!)</li>
<li>I finished many quilts (just didn't get to blogging about them) </li>
<li>Lee turned 30 </li>
<li>I completed my first commissioned quilt!</li>
</ul>
<br />
I'm excited to see what 2014 has in store for us, including my 30th birthday and starting an Etsy shop for my quilts and crafts. And although it isn't a resolution, I do plan to blog more. ;)<br />

That's how I feel lately, like I'm running circles all over the place! I haven't had much time for quilting, which involves many circles as I
pebble quilt my quilting bee quilt, however I am excited to announce a
new quilt in the works! </div>
<div dir="ltr">

<div dir="ltr">
<br />
My coworker is expecting a new baby at the end of the year (which means an upcoming baby quilt) and she has asked me to make her son the quilt for his new twin sized bed! We've had many brainstorming sessions and I've spent many evenings sketching plans for the fabric she wanted to use. Finally a quilt layout was chosen, calculations were made and she ordered the fabric, which arrived today! Tomorrow I get to go pick out some coordinating prints to go with it for a special paper pieced train panel, there is a transportation theme because this 21 month old loves "Cho-CHOOOOs!" I am so excited, this is my first BIG TIME quilt project. :)</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I promised to get it done before Lee and I head to Hawaii next month, which is when they plan to re-decorate his bedroom/the baby's room. All this will be done while we work on mudding and painting our new basement bathroom, plus I am organizing Lincoln's second annual Bark For Life which is next weekend. All these things on my to-do list are making me want to go for a run to handle the stress of it all. At least my half marathon I've been training for all summer is over, I did not do so well! Needless to say blogging may not get done for a while, sorry friends.</div>

Just like most churches this one holds a week of vacation bible school every summer. Since our school has no religious affiliation the teachers that teach during the summer get a week off so the church can use our classrooms. :) So I must ask, what better way is there to start a week of work off than to visit local fabric stores!?<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Can you tell what the theme of this future quilt is going to be?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I also visited Joann's to get a few staples and use my coupons. While I was there I couldn't pass up these yummy Denise Schmidt prints:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw223vd07INdH4Nwy1Eo5eUaZy-Q_0eZ2l_qsvpL9Fq3WKANaw1UjUOwocBJ8VtSoSQ_EET7hBEkWqKnCLCbuclFbQwWuUCcRC_NAgNjI0HNwLlXwf06k0OCYLN5flNL1vlrO49iUaF0A/s1600/P1040044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw223vd07INdH4Nwy1Eo5eUaZy-Q_0eZ2l_qsvpL9Fq3WKANaw1UjUOwocBJ8VtSoSQ_EET7hBEkWqKnCLCbuclFbQwWuUCcRC_NAgNjI0HNwLlXwf06k0OCYLN5flNL1vlrO49iUaF0A/s400/P1040044.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I'm going to use them for a scrap quilt I have in mind. You see as I was going through my scraps I came across A LOT of tiny strips and scraps of fabric that I don't have the heart to throw away. My grandma was a big hoarder and I clearly inherited some of that trait when it comes to craft materials (crafting was also passed on to me via my grandma Lil).<br />
<br />
Unlike my grandma I have organized my hoarding. Here we have usable strips for a future scrappy spiderweb quilt, or colorful strip block quilt, or BOTH. :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN35E6dCrRA_Bh3K7mKnGXddATB7uRaPt6x4BEFIQE6c_lqvejTUg_oWFCyHaSJQ2f_l7AMZ2qeIukhKI3Klybwsy4IUpxHqWb4w8-8vxBo4nj4wDKyIUcMT3Lq6CxmLhCXPoWgYcHS1s/s1600/P1040060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN35E6dCrRA_Bh3K7mKnGXddATB7uRaPt6x4BEFIQE6c_lqvejTUg_oWFCyHaSJQ2f_l7AMZ2qeIukhKI3Klybwsy4IUpxHqWb4w8-8vxBo4nj4wDKyIUcMT3Lq6CxmLhCXPoWgYcHS1s/s320/P1040060.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
And here we have the teeny tiny, pretty much useless scraps that I don't have the heart to throw away. This is where those Denise Schmidt prints come into play, these will be made into a quilt, a ticker tape quilt, inspired my <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2009/09/ticker-tape.html">Amanda Jean's </a>and <a href="http://sewtakeahike.typepad.com/sewtakeahike/2010/11/bqf-ticker-tape-twist.html">Penny's</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvOa7wAUpp8qJP0qiOLtd04lfafG40Pm6DpuaUccoKb0PJaedVZYlZPm68vmEVGMhPYzSiuUpuXleySeG2hajO-q07T9zBJqtJkN34I0IGMD2Y7EuYUOP-H-SOAlH-ePFFeD6OBx754f8/s1600/P1040061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvOa7wAUpp8qJP0qiOLtd04lfafG40Pm6DpuaUccoKb0PJaedVZYlZPm68vmEVGMhPYzSiuUpuXleySeG2hajO-q07T9zBJqtJkN34I0IGMD2Y7EuYUOP-H-SOAlH-ePFFeD6OBx754f8/s320/P1040061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I cut some 12 1/2" squares of white Kona cotton and I plan to sew these little bitty strips and scraps to the white blocks. As I work on planned and normally pieced quilts throughout the year I will toss the crumbs into this box then work on adding them to these squares in my free time, or as I need a break from working on other quilts. As I slowly move away from a beginning quilter and into a more seasoned one I am developing quilter's ADD...I have 4 quilts going at once right now, not including this new project.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVA_r3wafwevlyryjovkraTR9j27LeGlNfdZ7MT1DofxwUIFZVQrwZ_Lrk7nXXLAxF0QPDF3LP3OekBE-tmjvMC1TN9pmo1o3CyanY5e1CSBZ61nxd3nuDX7lLuRP2nEHIVaB4ogb2tyQ/s1600/P1040062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVA_r3wafwevlyryjovkraTR9j27LeGlNfdZ7MT1DofxwUIFZVQrwZ_Lrk7nXXLAxF0QPDF3LP3OekBE-tmjvMC1TN9pmo1o3CyanY5e1CSBZ61nxd3nuDX7lLuRP2nEHIVaB4ogb2tyQ/s320/P1040062.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It is going to take awhile but when I have enough of these ticker tape blocks the result is going to be a pretty and scrappy quilt full of my favorite prints, the pieces that I can't stand to put into the trash.<br />
<br />
*Disclaimer, this is not all of my unusable scraps. I have a separate bag of really tiny strips that I am going to use for greeting cards. :) I may have a problem!!!Candace:http://www.blogger.com/profile/14385583925168941189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5219616912833611768.post-10807732395413761182013-07-12T18:13:00.001-05:002013-07-12T19:04:06.773-05:00Scrap Sorting<div dir="ltr">

I'm not sure what most people's neighborhoods are like but in ours you can easily imagine what it's like to be in a war torn country. It makes me thankful for all the soldiers and vets that protect our country! Lee works with a guy that served 4 tours in Iraq and he has a hard time listening to the fireworks this time of year, they sure are beautiful at night though. To all those that have or are serving in military service, no matter the country, thank you for all you do! <br />

We had a quiet holiday at our house, filled with some house work and then relaxing. We were more looking forward to our weekend camping trip with friends. It was a blast to have great company while relaxing this weekend. The weather was perfect, the company was better, and the toasted marshmallows were excellent! We joined my good friends <a href="http://diariesofdomesticbliss.blogspot.com/">Cristy </a>and Drew and their wonderful kiddos.<br />

While snapping this photo I thought I would take a few shots of our recent bathroom makeover to share with you. This was one of my many crafts I worked on during my break from blogging: a new shower curtain and decor for our bathroom.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_IwGsR5eyD2Nhmw7HQmp0Q1m6-PJSH5S4UQrlRNrtVvujfBfB68j_ccf0ZC96ytudb7zEymNqNF368X7t_jSk5EHLOHsYiwjzDsYYK7fewnwnvAwGi74Inw5KRlIOfe0LB2mJeyg4kcA/s1600/P1030976.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_IwGsR5eyD2Nhmw7HQmp0Q1m6-PJSH5S4UQrlRNrtVvujfBfB68j_ccf0ZC96ytudb7zEymNqNF368X7t_jSk5EHLOHsYiwjzDsYYK7fewnwnvAwGi74Inw5KRlIOfe0LB2mJeyg4kcA/s400/P1030976.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I made this shower curtain using a flat sheet I got on sale at Target a long time ago, some rectangle cuts from my<a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/denyse_schmidt/flea_market_fancy"> Flea Market Fancy </a>stash, and some large eyelets. I recommend browsing clearance sections for flat sheets, they come in handy for these kind of projects! I didn't have to worry about large seams here, just one large cut of the sheet then hem the sides. I stitched the pieced stripes of focal fabric over the white sheet so that when I wash it I won't have to worry about any fraying. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJkO0OuHJRJQFPu2W8x5ZKG4a6oKSjtu4Y8irMsC3mdKSlSoxN-HJNkeRGQG8zNFtd3cDnSmuiNXUdPaQ31eOuNjxNFr3t3qede8IXsjHvls7WO6tTFwUPVDXuXrJre_iSz5r6ra5MMsE/s1600/P1030996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJkO0OuHJRJQFPu2W8x5ZKG4a6oKSjtu4Y8irMsC3mdKSlSoxN-HJNkeRGQG8zNFtd3cDnSmuiNXUdPaQ31eOuNjxNFr3t3qede8IXsjHvls7WO6tTFwUPVDXuXrJre_iSz5r6ra5MMsE/s400/P1030996.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
It came together in a matter of hours, then I worked on new shelves, artwork and decor for the much needed bathroom makeover. I'm working on a shaggy rag rug for next
to the sink, all other decor was simple and cheap. Like the owl, yellow
pitcher, and jars, all under $10! I used a mason jar
to make a soap dispenser too. :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo07_rUIbiocZlMJyNZoedLEg-5RUqetYXAqoxHAAG7gxNCHy5ubHr4Ss2U9QPFwv33Zz-R2Vkb4ZMOfjzPCE-h_4Q_vP1L3X_qbsedKy_sCd6LuDd-txq_w8Ef818gV5uAJ8SkKuT8DU/s1600/P1030997.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo07_rUIbiocZlMJyNZoedLEg-5RUqetYXAqoxHAAG7gxNCHy5ubHr4Ss2U9QPFwv33Zz-R2Vkb4ZMOfjzPCE-h_4Q_vP1L3X_qbsedKy_sCd6LuDd-txq_w8Ef818gV5uAJ8SkKuT8DU/s400/P1030997.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
For the artwork I framed a few scraps of <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/denyse_schmidt/flea_market_fancy">Flea Market Fancy</a> to go with photography prints I got at our local craft
store: hot/cold tub handles. One of my favorite features are the photos of
Lee and I as kids in the tub. A "Bath Time" theme. :)<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfHp7qhGXAer_SgKL7aQTTno6WTdnm-evqJl1BVQ1UirIuH4DpeL_ptcD93aqal1SOtskHhwjUsZoSr2L2b24k805kOpyacmcVe3RkuTxx0b_eWnRlaXjq7s4qoxb5uiBw1O9BuIVQsU0/s1600/P1030993.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfHp7qhGXAer_SgKL7aQTTno6WTdnm-evqJl1BVQ1UirIuH4DpeL_ptcD93aqal1SOtskHhwjUsZoSr2L2b24k805kOpyacmcVe3RkuTxx0b_eWnRlaXjq7s4qoxb5uiBw1O9BuIVQsU0/s400/P1030993.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
We will be printing and framing the one I took of Penny today, then when we have a future child he/she will be added to the wall too. I really want to add bath toys to a wire basket by the tub, but we don't really have a need for them yet. I also want to get more decorative frames for the bath time photos. Oh, I almost forgot; for some light reading I placed one of my favorite picture books out,<a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Tub-People-Pam-Conrad/dp/0064433064"> The Tub People</a>. If you have kids, check out this cute story, it was one of my childhood favorites. Now this bathroom is a place to relax....or play. :)Candace:http://www.blogger.com/profile/14385583925168941189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5219616912833611768.post-38070656693845972642013-07-03T17:07:00.000-05:002013-07-07T15:14:49.133-05:00I SpyI spy a witch's broom, monkey, owl, and train,<br />

I made these two quilts back in 2012, one for a good friend that I never see anymore and her little boy, the other for an old co-worker and her little man. I love making baby quilts, and had wanted to do an I spy quilt forever, when I finally got to it I made two!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhok1miXYahqY5ldCZooiy6ZRbKTRQl83RVc3zPJOed_LYHS-ltySKOi6xzbYbEi_QdiZnKJ-M8OHLDrayJwPg-NRVNA4C8CfmQAlzZ_l3jewBipN8jlImmpSav1vVanrOOW4cO48VhYGU/s1600/P1030716.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhok1miXYahqY5ldCZooiy6ZRbKTRQl83RVc3zPJOed_LYHS-ltySKOi6xzbYbEi_QdiZnKJ-M8OHLDrayJwPg-NRVNA4C8CfmQAlzZ_l3jewBipN8jlImmpSav1vVanrOOW4cO48VhYGU/s400/P1030716.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
The thing about I spy quilts for babies is that they tend to be so busy, and in my opinion (the early childhood educator in me is coming out) overstimulating! I knew I did not want to do that for any I spy quilts I made, so for these I went with small 2.5" squares on solid background, that way there was some calm space to wrap in the busy area. On one quilt I added ribbons around the binding, I think I like the ribbons best, a feature I've been adding to a lot of baby quilts lately.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiatr-S8aXTZPL24akGHgET5KNPhRibUYZaJ_3pxIsNC7pQI7tjCYsehfeRLBqB9npuR9g0adv6jcpl6FWGLO8JOMC-jljADyIBNnth4IJaHzbsUweXkghOZYq-wqvoJbvP8TfVAJ276zE/s1600/P1030714.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiatr-S8aXTZPL24akGHgET5KNPhRibUYZaJ_3pxIsNC7pQI7tjCYsehfeRLBqB9npuR9g0adv6jcpl6FWGLO8JOMC-jljADyIBNnth4IJaHzbsUweXkghOZYq-wqvoJbvP8TfVAJ276zE/s400/P1030714.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
For both quilts I used a Kona khaki solid fabric for the quilt top, then a khaki flannel on the back. I quilted using straight lines of different colored thread; orange, blue, green, red, and yellow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsLzfw5MDM6NLTBlK3QXZt17_70AMp-fRfKq_aCk6CAf8nkp9Z2m4hSMBbc2wJ_J7XnEaZb9CWo1cmQWidgXmUU4DaD5XRZs_lXSsqkXAk7qp5YgrLT_80O5hF6ACYX7O8CjmQCbCdmFc/s1600/P1030452.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsLzfw5MDM6NLTBlK3QXZt17_70AMp-fRfKq_aCk6CAf8nkp9Z2m4hSMBbc2wJ_J7XnEaZb9CWo1cmQWidgXmUU4DaD5XRZs_lXSsqkXAk7qp5YgrLT_80O5hF6ACYX7O8CjmQCbCdmFc/s400/P1030452.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
For my good friend I added small pieces of me into the quilt, such as Princess Leia, Han Solo, coffee cups, owls, and bicycle wheels. For the other quilt I did a 4 by 4 block of green squares then branched out to more colorful blocks, I love this and may do something similar again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw65870Hqo9OEKKz78x6CBytuw64VekCStgUM8DaBeyqhcmT0KNClF1obLu7y7odhBwLC9j5S__x3lVwxFyBic-F4L2bAGE40iLD87D9VNaDmHicPyRh_wuMUHnJyoKKIt1wsQpfm6p64/s1600/P1030712.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw65870Hqo9OEKKz78x6CBytuw64VekCStgUM8DaBeyqhcmT0KNClF1obLu7y7odhBwLC9j5S__x3lVwxFyBic-F4L2bAGE40iLD87D9VNaDmHicPyRh_wuMUHnJyoKKIt1wsQpfm6p64/s320/P1030712.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I used the same Kona khaki cotton for the binding, which I love because it makes the quilt feel so organic, almost unfinished. I will definitely be making more of these, perhaps when I start up an Etsy shop these will be for sale. :)Candace:http://www.blogger.com/profile/14385583925168941189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5219616912833611768.post-54763299849621619962013-06-29T19:20:00.002-05:002013-06-29T19:21:00.116-05:00Pinwheels in Central ParkThis little quilt has been in the works for a long time....much like the recipient. <br />

A friend from high school was diagnosed with breast cancer when we were 23 years old. We were all shocked! There we were in our early 20s: young, healthy, celebrating marriages, loving life, invincible...and one of us was struck down with the C-word! She was one of the lucky ones though. She underwent treatment, opted for a double mastectomy and met her 5 year cancer free mark this past December.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Out of all my good friends from high school, this friend and her husband shared a seat in our kid free boat, but not by choice like Lee and I. They were told by doctors to wait, finish medications, make sure the cancer was really gone, so sadly they waited. This couple is tough, they stayed strong throughout cancer treatment and during the long waiting process of being able to try and have kids. They knew there was a chance it wouldn't happen for them, and they prepared for it.<br />
In December when Lee and I read their Christmas card we were so happy to hear that the cancer was officially gone, 5 years free of cancer! We also learned they were expecting! :)<br />

I wanted to make sure this quilt would be perfect for them, and their little girl so I was very selective and specific with this quilt. I wanted the prints I used to be full of life, because these future parents had lived a lot of life so far, and this little girl was their miracle of life. I wanted the prints I used to be girly, and gender neutral at the same time; I settled with the rest of my charm pack of Central Park from Kate Spain. The trees, flowers and small animals in this line were perfect, plus there were shades of purple, mom-to-be LOVES purple!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcj2iIkM0AydhaH2w3C76mZsDmwtQiQGIUUxlldTD9cWtpj-auKArNwPTddUyQbPu7IHxQZsZZ8EGwOw75a4yKQdmXz-JtJ6U_y8zXqi0QEGCVPIaepRJsJRYVRQhCCezQBiAheX1DayE/s1600/P1030832.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcj2iIkM0AydhaH2w3C76mZsDmwtQiQGIUUxlldTD9cWtpj-auKArNwPTddUyQbPu7IHxQZsZZ8EGwOw75a4yKQdmXz-JtJ6U_y8zXqi0QEGCVPIaepRJsJRYVRQhCCezQBiAheX1DayE/s640/P1030832.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
Once I settled on this charm pack it didn't take long to decide I would be using pinwheels: whimsical, full of life, and energy. What I didn't want was the old fashioned all in a row grandma style pinwheel quilt though. I wanted my pinwheels to be random, floating on a solid background.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHO2juR8rptPENnPKwuwVpWQX2_XPtj22-BM3BwpLgnm8eWVwndJX6l0Wva0IsCdLuMt8K2SbzlLv7XcQxh06METqTe9OmYJCHzkM8Nd09TIM1RWNVe5OkOXrwy0rwJAQMAeQiXn3sByI/s1600/P1030840.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHO2juR8rptPENnPKwuwVpWQX2_XPtj22-BM3BwpLgnm8eWVwndJX6l0Wva0IsCdLuMt8K2SbzlLv7XcQxh06METqTe9OmYJCHzkM8Nd09TIM1RWNVe5OkOXrwy0rwJAQMAeQiXn3sByI/s400/P1030840.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I used <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2011/05/windy-days-quilt.html">this tutorial</a> from Moda Bake Shop to whip up my pinwheels quickly, then I had them up on my design wall forever, constantly in a new arrangement. It took me a while to get the right layout and size for my pinwheels but I finally did. Of course not in time for the baby shower (go figure!) so the new momma was given a soft taggie block I made with a few prints from my charm pack, and a husker taggie blanket (Dad-to-be loved it!) to open with a promise that the quilt would be done before little 'Wolverina' arrived. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I hesitantly used a white background for this quilt, I'm always afraid to use white in baby quilts because of stains. I found somewhere on a blog, or Pinterest, that you can use<a href="http://www.scotchgard.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/NAScotchgard/Global/Products/Product_Catalog/?PC_7_RJH9U523005FA0IQ73MR5E1AJ1000000_nid=MG9SB00W49gsDZQG2JGH6WglB2JT7QB6FDbl"> Scotchgaurd</a> to stainproof white quilts, but I didn't try it. Has anyone done this?<br />
<br />
The back of the quilt is a purple/pink flannel, with a strip of white, a pinwheel and my quilt label. I used the same shade of purple/pink for the thread and stipple quilted it throughout. I love how the thread color contrasts with the white background and then blends in on the back. <br />

For the binding I cut and stitched together 3 yellow prints of fat quarters I had lying around that belong in the Central Park line, I love the yellow cheery border, like a frame of sunshine around these spinning pinwheels.<br />
<br />
I delivered on my promise, finishing the quilting and binding as miss Peyton Nola came into the world. Then I quickly washed, photographed and drove it to the new little lady. She is precious! I am so happy for my friends!<br />

What I learned from this quilt: careful planning pays off! I love everything about this quilt and unlike other quilts I didn't come out wishing I had taken my time because something wasn't perfect. I guess slow and steady planning is the key. :)Candace:http://www.blogger.com/profile/14385583925168941189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5219616912833611768.post-40191074142976843092013-06-26T18:31:00.001-05:002013-06-27T16:41:29.746-05:00Traveling Quilt<div dir="ltr">

<br />
Many changes have occurred in the last month for myself. I started a new job, which I LOVE! I chopped ALL my hair off, well like 13 inches, which I LOVE. I donated to Pantene Beautiful Lenghts, this was my second time donating hair. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have re-decorated our office/quilting room (much needed!), and bathroom, a change my husband cringed at. "What was wrong with the old shower curtain?" he asked when he got home from his second job. That's right, he has <b>2</b> jobs right now and I never see him, another big change for us! He's working to help pay for our trip to Hawaii, we are so excited for this trip! Another change is that we have 2 new computer monitors on our desktop in our office/quilting room. They take up a bunch of space, but allow for Lee to work from home a few days a week, AND I can watch Netflix/movies easier when quilting. :) I plan to start making some baby quilts and small lap quilts to sell on Etsy.<br />
<br />
For a friend and old co-worker she has gone through a big change as well, she's a Mommy! I have yet to meet her little man, Gabe. I want to let her settle in at home with her week old kiddo, but his pictures are adorable. Here's his quilt that I had promised to share last month and not gotten around too. Sorry. :)<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivyM8-uQxLEvDTZ4DdBPUefBXuPu1QcwQNumK2juLbmsve6h0vimp1MzJVzTpKzmIQGQgH8-7M4qGpIwgSdhqVhuLcDBHxn5aVe2b9aKGTMghV9pjsJe1MzDRA_2t54R0pTW-y6M5832Q/s1600/P1030763.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivyM8-uQxLEvDTZ4DdBPUefBXuPu1QcwQNumK2juLbmsve6h0vimp1MzJVzTpKzmIQGQgH8-7M4qGpIwgSdhqVhuLcDBHxn5aVe2b9aKGTMghV9pjsJe1MzDRA_2t54R0pTW-y6M5832Q/s400/P1030763.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I call this quilt "Gabe's Tune." Gabe's dad is in a band, so I planned to use some of the <a href="http://www.fashionablefabrics.com/groovy-guitar-by-michael-miller-fabrics.aspx?gclid=CMD39vSU57cCFdFDMgodbiQAbA">Groovy Guitars fabric by Michael Miller </a>that I had in my stash when I first found out they were expecting. Then I got word from the new Mommy that the nursery was going to be a rock-star theme, so it worked out perfectly! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY97KRE5w4ggV6FQNJI857pF35DhUKKcuL7n36ONEOReW6eJ1nFyxDz2iSB6Gg8rZdoDnwoFPBib69hHzI4CKXBb5TLstTtNa_TAnH-52iLpNRs_0nCF5s9flCctD6pEnMa7r-sRz9HEk/s1600/P1030762.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY97KRE5w4ggV6FQNJI857pF35DhUKKcuL7n36ONEOReW6eJ1nFyxDz2iSB6Gg8rZdoDnwoFPBib69hHzI4CKXBb5TLstTtNa_TAnH-52iLpNRs_0nCF5s9flCctD6pEnMa7r-sRz9HEk/s400/P1030762.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I used some scraps from my stash to go along with the color scheme in the Groovy Guitars I had, then I bought a few fat quarters to add to it: musical notation and some dots/stripes/solids in grey, blues, whites and blacks. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWd2OW0JtJEz-guFUXXdp1cjdr1a4Ccly7mAaJKF7ZLW8BCJzU4gZCQJNUyHXTUjAqWKPPFCwJ8MVVoC8KjLACjomfWO7Yp4mcJgnhNTWAfHoLVyzy_0UF_1VzZIVQcsSvaxsU14Nsuws/s1600/P1030766.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWd2OW0JtJEz-guFUXXdp1cjdr1a4Ccly7mAaJKF7ZLW8BCJzU4gZCQJNUyHXTUjAqWKPPFCwJ8MVVoC8KjLACjomfWO7Yp4mcJgnhNTWAfHoLVyzy_0UF_1VzZIVQcsSvaxsU14Nsuws/s400/P1030766.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
The process for making this quilt involved marking off the quilt top with painter's tape on my design wall. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL45tHpt0dbBJ7PTMPUSsqlK08l8YQe_shQrmGRZ5X0mheRyVzmS98GyoA4B429GmGFULD1TQcBfJiGZFQMeLCougPSEyt12IfWBUrG8mJhCiGGwHmX9V4zVkY5nUDsehZwFutZLccvA0/s1600/work+in+progress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL45tHpt0dbBJ7PTMPUSsqlK08l8YQe_shQrmGRZ5X0mheRyVzmS98GyoA4B429GmGFULD1TQcBfJiGZFQMeLCougPSEyt12IfWBUrG8mJhCiGGwHmX9V4zVkY5nUDsehZwFutZLccvA0/s400/work+in+progress.jpg" width="225" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sorry, this was taken on my cell phone. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Then I laid out strips of fabric in varying lengths and widths at a diagonal within the 36" square space. I added strips of Kona Cotton Medium Grey to the ends and overlapped over the painter's tape quite a bit to account for seams and trimming.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiVLieskdfC0fDCBg5BNeJ76FIaC4QK6StamjnZ77wTNvy8SaSS7Z2hUXcI4RcG3hyphenhyphen6yBhc9R3UkcT6e4ejS4QJHF5dLdLShIT_ULltvnLx4e1q_F24Jux-kjKxP1wfW_WP00XTKIJ2wA/s1600/gabes+tune.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiVLieskdfC0fDCBg5BNeJ76FIaC4QK6StamjnZ77wTNvy8SaSS7Z2hUXcI4RcG3hyphenhyphen6yBhc9R3UkcT6e4ejS4QJHF5dLdLShIT_ULltvnLx4e1q_F24Jux-kjKxP1wfW_WP00XTKIJ2wA/s400/gabes+tune.jpg" width="225" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Another cell phone pic :(</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
To trim and square up the top I used the painter's tape again on the kitchen floor where I baste my quilts, sorry I don't have a picture of this process. Laying the tape on the floor as I cut helped me visualize the quilt top before cutting so I didn't make any mistakes. Usually I make mistakes cutting so this process helped a lot! I guess what I learned from this quilt was how important taking your time is, and double checking before your cuts really does pay off!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj86Kf3gl3iGnIXpESOws5lGAckdrPUylFvZ0_8FBSr0R0sEtBdb-e1OxPt7O-Yvn6xJ8Tn4NNe-ySNkxoCzNREjMbV-0r8nNwmX18RjlHfegz-UiFaVXINUTDYtj5G7pSnIsFKw9PYGHE/s1600/P1030759.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj86Kf3gl3iGnIXpESOws5lGAckdrPUylFvZ0_8FBSr0R0sEtBdb-e1OxPt7O-Yvn6xJ8Tn4NNe-ySNkxoCzNREjMbV-0r8nNwmX18RjlHfegz-UiFaVXINUTDYtj5G7pSnIsFKw9PYGHE/s400/P1030759.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
For the back I used a light blue Kona Cotton, not sure of the color, which I also used for the binding. I love pieced together backs, but with baby quilts it is so much easier to use one piece of fabric, and saves so much time.For the quilting a stippled it. This quilt was really fast to put together, probably because I used so my strips from my stash. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgizpwRKHRdsHNMZzOZq8gPzTkJmjZBFJARG_6Df8fYLog7g4nQFPx0_F1LzlQytnp7oGY0W_rB4hwB74epok_FlmYuZm11Ec5J2e5CMBgrAsacHDP7q0WUGcw5vaQiPw8bKE3ktw_AnXA/s1600/P1030768.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgizpwRKHRdsHNMZzOZq8gPzTkJmjZBFJARG_6Df8fYLog7g4nQFPx0_F1LzlQytnp7oGY0W_rB4hwB74epok_FlmYuZm11Ec5J2e5CMBgrAsacHDP7q0WUGcw5vaQiPw8bKE3ktw_AnXA/s400/P1030768.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I love the way it turned out with it's scrappy strips and off center diagonal lines. Gabe's parents loved to too which made my day since they're not the quilt type. I look forward to stopping by sometime soon and meeting the little guy. Also, to meeting another set of friends' new baby set to arrive this month. Her quilt top is being pieced together right now.<br />

I completed my first 1/2 marathon! Who knew 13.1 miles could be so fun?! There I am just after 'the hill' (which in my opinion was not hard at all). It was the perfect weather for running, mid 40s, overcast and a very light breeze. The weather, the amazing crowd in Lincoln that comes out to cheer for 10,000 runners at 7 am, and my many supporters (preschool students, parents, friends, wonderful husband) helped me to run my best long run pace yet!<br />
<br />
I completed the marathon in 2 hours, 14 minutes and 20 seconds. That's an average pace of 10:16 min/mile, about 30 seconds better than my 13 mile long run during training. I was super nervous that my IT band pain was going to cause me to have to walk due to horrible knee pain, but alas I ran the whole thing and beat my 2 1/2 hour goal! Can you tell I am super pumped about it! :)<br />

Here I am after the race, with my finisher medal. :) I was very cold once I crossed the finish line in Memorial Stadium to receive this lovely medal. And walking was a major challenge! If it weren't for the blisters on my feet I would have kept running, it hurt that bad! I must say, I have MAJOR RESPECT for those individuals that do full marathons! 26.2 miles, wow!!! I am hooked though. I think I might do a half marathon this September and I plan to run the half marathon again next year. :) <br />

And here is a snap shot of a wrapped up, <b>finished quilt</b> for a shower that was at the end of April. This quilt was finished in time for baby Gabe's shower, unlike the quilt I am working on right now. I had to make a few small gifts for mom-to-be Jess and her baby girl to present at her baby shower yesterday. I promise my next blog post will be photos of a quilt. Perhaps the one wrapped up above. :)</div>

Sometime back in 2012 my wonderful friend Cristy, over at <a href="http://diariesofdomesticbliss.blogspot.com/">diaries of domestic bliss</a>, asked me to make a doll quilt for her daughter Berkeley. Berkeley, like many other young toddlers, had become obsessed with dolls and caring for her babies. To support her interest in dolls, and love of nurturing things, they wanted to give her a doll bed, and of course a quilt must go with it! Well this Christmas gift became a very collaborative effort, lots of love, many talents and special people worked together to get this gift finished for little miss Berkeley.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD4mR2cY4frW37_X3ZvuStqq853jUMYrBgQ0GnUlYbQBRmcPz9NQjpkBA5JLh0-sUzw0mhOx2sLsQjmLYdLG8fiypMY8ETMIBAfwZzu2Xrztke38QRhd097eGBqn5O9uNdflSU8T6oReE/s1600/P1030654.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD4mR2cY4frW37_X3ZvuStqq853jUMYrBgQ0GnUlYbQBRmcPz9NQjpkBA5JLh0-sUzw0mhOx2sLsQjmLYdLG8fiypMY8ETMIBAfwZzu2Xrztke38QRhd097eGBqn5O9uNdflSU8T6oReE/s400/P1030654.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Our friend Sean, Berkeley's uncle, made the bed. Here it is with cousin Patrick standing by, and his Cabbage Patch Doll.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibdp_beadxBY2sXWvVZ2PdEOXkWRiiT2bxXBmR719I9LNyeMWa9C1lHzuuXBzbBsw-NqeZ10N-2F4qu3iIkFFs-kuM8dzbASKPLlx6NcyHu3fLyS9GlHkQ5BeARK-IJPT9vBPMFzXvoic/s1600/20121209_172238.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibdp_beadxBY2sXWvVZ2PdEOXkWRiiT2bxXBmR719I9LNyeMWa9C1lHzuuXBzbBsw-NqeZ10N-2F4qu3iIkFFs-kuM8dzbASKPLlx6NcyHu3fLyS9GlHkQ5BeARK-IJPT9vBPMFzXvoic/s640/20121209_172238.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>

After Sean got to work on the bed and I found out the dimensions (did I mention it was made in Loveland, CO) I got to work on the quilt. I had fallen in love with Kate Spain's fabric line <a href="http://www.quiltingdaily.com/blogs/lindsey/archive/2010/11/16/interview-with-fabric-designer-kate-spain.aspx">Central Park</a>, and happened to have a few fat quarters and a charm pack on hand so this was the color scheme I went with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJWPJaabMWJt7DzT-uPyXDhUne4aRNXTYcipZrPrbtJdMyzI60yKDisipq2YbbwkPplB8Dojhl7yw0x-tcKePtI4TkKuzvKjaVSu3r1jjVZJkXyDYB00hZGb6mhlE3c-LzctRTvePsbFE/s1600/2012-12-09_18-27-30_272.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJWPJaabMWJt7DzT-uPyXDhUne4aRNXTYcipZrPrbtJdMyzI60yKDisipq2YbbwkPplB8Dojhl7yw0x-tcKePtI4TkKuzvKjaVSu3r1jjVZJkXyDYB00hZGb6mhlE3c-LzctRTvePsbFE/s400/2012-12-09_18-27-30_272.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Once I had fabric selected I sent a text to Aunt Mandy so she could have an idea for painting the bed. Then I got to work on the quilt. I love Granny Squares quilts! So I quickly joined the many other quilters in cyberspace and created mini granny squares blocks for the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsIMVGv1CnQsVyFLllFf6rFS4u90pr6EF7VTSbbnct81hs7wBtJHWJuvy5qQtaa8UICMGN6D_p4PD-ru8TfNwDkJoeQAbI1EOTUexrLEUBUZLUcokm4SrbDOfY30cK668r3IfcNcS5LQs/s1600/P1030656.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsIMVGv1CnQsVyFLllFf6rFS4u90pr6EF7VTSbbnct81hs7wBtJHWJuvy5qQtaa8UICMGN6D_p4PD-ru8TfNwDkJoeQAbI1EOTUexrLEUBUZLUcokm4SrbDOfY30cK668r3IfcNcS5LQs/s400/P1030656.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I cut my charm squares down to mini size and pieced the 6 tiny blocks together with a light grey Kona solid. Then I used a fat quarter to frame the granny squares and as the backing. I loved the emphasis of purple in the fabric color scheme so I choose another purple fat quarter to cut into for the binding. As for the quilting, I used my walking foot to outline the colored squares with pink thread. I really hate to use pinks and pastels for girls. There is far too much of that in our society, but I felt the bright orange, green, yellow and blue off balanced the girly shades in this fabric line. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJU82vIudLdCNQETLjZRv20j3ElL2Bc-JXPulFJLs8itmIGGU1An2ATnANVtXwHW8UOcJJR-97qMPpyAM3hfOlviR8yuK8xv_u1pv12O9c3eaw06JV8PPVmT-pDoApqa_ULYK6RZ_3_KQ/s1600/granny+smith+square+zoom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJU82vIudLdCNQETLjZRv20j3ElL2Bc-JXPulFJLs8itmIGGU1An2ATnANVtXwHW8UOcJJR-97qMPpyAM3hfOlviR8yuK8xv_u1pv12O9c3eaw06JV8PPVmT-pDoApqa_ULYK6RZ_3_KQ/s400/granny+smith+square+zoom.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love how these blocks turned out! I have on my to do list a granny squares quilt with my Flea Market Fancy fat quarter set I purchased last spring. :) Of course I had to add a small pillow to go with it, no doll bed is complete without a pillow for baby's head. I used the fat quarter from the binding and strips of my charm squares I cut into for detail.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIdViK2UF4p_aqLBs_T_uTgFxghKN0TnlJN0NxXUMBXDGBOtq38HQCeZIZJ7MsIqV-MHaq_jdWrTcafVKRtH52iGoww_rxqEVqwPEj-Ot3tO_HQooLHgxoAeUU3Q26Ue5LVVYQBUJH5Ig/s1600/P1030661.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIdViK2UF4p_aqLBs_T_uTgFxghKN0TnlJN0NxXUMBXDGBOtq38HQCeZIZJ7MsIqV-MHaq_jdWrTcafVKRtH52iGoww_rxqEVqwPEj-Ot3tO_HQooLHgxoAeUU3Q26Ue5LVVYQBUJH5Ig/s400/P1030661.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the quilt and pillow were finished I took a few pictures with my American Girls Doll, Felicity, before Cristy picked it up in Lincoln and took it home to Omaha. </div>

So here is the finished Christmas gift, waiting under the tree Christmas morning. Berkeley got a new Cabbage Patch doll to go with the bed and doll quilt. I am sure she loves it too. She is a great little Mommy to her dolls because she has a wonderful Mommy to roll model for her. </div>

Quilting came to a sudden halt after I finished my <a href="http://craftycandace.blogspot.com/2012/10/meet-ghastlies.html">Ghastlies </a>(which is still being used even though Halloween stuff is tucked away until next October). <br />

Much of my time from October until December was spent finishing my undergrad degree, and studying for the GRE. I applied to Grad school and was accepted into the Educational Psychology program. So, although I graduated in December, I am still in school. Along with studying, I managed to get a few crafts done though. I can thank pinterest for keeping my creative juices flowing. Here is a picture of one of my wind chimes I made (I am obsessed with wind chimes!). I have gotten a lot of small craft projects done throughout the house, just not much quilting.<br />

Until lately...there are more babies being born, so more quilts have been getting done. The quilting bug has bitten me once again. Here is a peek at a baby quilt I did for a co-worker.<br />

Plus... I have finally put together my <a href="http://craftycandace.blogspot.com/2011/07/bee-there-or-bee-squares.html">quilting bee</a> top and back! I have one quilt in line to be quilted for a baby shower this weekend, then this guy is getting basted and on the quilting table.<br />

I am going to try to get back into blogging. For the few of you that actually care. :) The next few weeks may be busy though, I do my first 1/2 marathon on the 5th! Hopefully mother nature will get the memo that spring started before then. It has been VERY cold this month, my run last night was in the wind and 30 degree weather. Last year we were wearing shorts in March. This year I will be lucky if I am not wearing my winter running gear at the start of the marathon. I will share some of my projects with you soon! Candace:http://www.blogger.com/profile/14385583925168941189noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5219616912833611768.post-9312702672589100002012-10-13T16:42:00.005-05:002012-10-15T16:19:39.862-05:00Meet the Ghastlies!Finally, I am posting my favorite quilt to date. The Ghastlies!!! Wouldn't you love to meet them:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFhiBPlG5Vak0o3dKIbxSN9CF0DF_S09so1_KYn8AyUU6tzmbOhhhydAr0W25REyNnzc6VP4ar2UzPCIY89GsP4xVgtE9O3QylepiWfS3lARPvUGdu3QM2sl_aJM5Yub8DXFm8ihycNj0/s1600/P1030492.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFhiBPlG5Vak0o3dKIbxSN9CF0DF_S09so1_KYn8AyUU6tzmbOhhhydAr0W25REyNnzc6VP4ar2UzPCIY89GsP4xVgtE9O3QylepiWfS3lARPvUGdu3QM2sl_aJM5Yub8DXFm8ihycNj0/s400/P1030492.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I was inspired by <a href="http://thimbleanna.com/projects/ghastlies.html">this quilt</a>, with a few differences. I went for muted oranges and fabrics that were not necessarily "Halloween." I love that fall weather is here now, I get to snuggle under the Ghastlies every evening. Here are my favorite Ghastlies:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I love that I cut this guy out like he is in a coffin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhutuzlJCIPxF9Q5xPpqxMgsp-Z1owci8knWY7o8VKZ71PLBjp-kquRGBJbhup5wRSQjAoCbnTvR435QzYVPCVQCBbl0ZptXsGNXoYvors9Jha-KY2uiAjAnD9ruILErQVlpbmwuVbdMrA/s1600/P1030498.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhutuzlJCIPxF9Q5xPpqxMgsp-Z1owci8knWY7o8VKZ71PLBjp-kquRGBJbhup5wRSQjAoCbnTvR435QzYVPCVQCBbl0ZptXsGNXoYvors9Jha-KY2uiAjAnD9ruILErQVlpbmwuVbdMrA/s320/P1030498.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I quilted around the wonky log cabin blocks in each layer using my free motion foot. It was much easier to use this to make the "straight" lines than to use the walking foot and rotate my quilt. It was way too bulky. I got the hang of it after a few squares and only had to quilt one square. In other words, my perfectionism compromised so that I could finish this guy by October.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZHKXusmbAC1eJMELAAHerjxqUHPrFNn2Dif1QPqFOBOa7cw6iUpZsChCfCOg1cq-2c25tFW8BXD_OnKxld3g_qb8uF6QdJwIZKgpxemDWuOGCBir-w8HCHPrqhsbcOy8pGnuqidtTrGc/s1600/P1030512.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZHKXusmbAC1eJMELAAHerjxqUHPrFNn2Dif1QPqFOBOa7cw6iUpZsChCfCOg1cq-2c25tFW8BXD_OnKxld3g_qb8uF6QdJwIZKgpxemDWuOGCBir-w8HCHPrqhsbcOy8pGnuqidtTrGc/s320/P1030512.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Hopefully you can tell from these two pictures that I did a crazy scribble quilting in the sashing of the quilt. I tried to mimic the scratchy scribbles from the <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/alexander_henry_house_designer/ghastlies/ghastly_bramble_in_natural">Ghastly Bramble</a> fabric that I used in the blocks. It created a nice texture on the quilt and allowed me to be crazy and wild as I quilted it. It was nice not having to worry about where my stitches were going and overlapping as I free motion quilted. I imagine the Ghastlies wouldn't care if their quilting were perfect and would overlap their stitches. It was carefree quilting, but it sure did use a lot of thread!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH2umoliyeDFZ02qu338Tew2RFOTEcA-bMEKux-49nAkSeoYqkfEBM4bXUE7gw41YgKrBdJcd7ogCEM-CJEFF_Sj7VrjYB6iqrkvcNn5tfUSjUakwAEB-tjTN2gWvb3wvy1uz2AVSR9ys/s1600/P1030506.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH2umoliyeDFZ02qu338Tew2RFOTEcA-bMEKux-49nAkSeoYqkfEBM4bXUE7gw41YgKrBdJcd7ogCEM-CJEFF_Sj7VrjYB6iqrkvcNn5tfUSjUakwAEB-tjTN2gWvb3wvy1uz2AVSR9ys/s320/P1030506.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
You can see the texture the quilting created on the back. I pieced together a strip of fabrics used in the log cabin blocks for the back with uneven pieces cut at diagonals. Then I pieced together light gray, dark gray, and black fabrics to finish it up. The binding is a fabric with uneven stripes of shades of gray and black if goes great with the back of the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghX4WmQBGu2bqDVyaJwtN2nhyphenhyphenv1miSDKKSjZHgqJaXY88hgNPxuEg1vFBEXfh4vZgB1h_xBhRNrdigrR-W6-fC8aGEEHHrY4QvCvX5tsxbMGRw2fINbnxtJ84OuA1wVMwztbcI3PDMsHs/s1600/P1030517.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghX4WmQBGu2bqDVyaJwtN2nhyphenhyphenv1miSDKKSjZHgqJaXY88hgNPxuEg1vFBEXfh4vZgB1h_xBhRNrdigrR-W6-fC8aGEEHHrY4QvCvX5tsxbMGRw2fINbnxtJ84OuA1wVMwztbcI3PDMsHs/s320/P1030517.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
In this picture you can see that the dark gray and black stripes of the back were cut at a diagonal then pieced together. My husband had to help me do some calculating for this because I was running low on fabric and really didn't want to make an extra trip to the store. I think this shot shows the textures a little better too.<br />

I probably looked a little silly when I took my dog to the park with a quilt and camera to take some photos of this guy. Penny didn't mind waiting in the car as I got a few shots in though, we enjoyed a great run afterwards too. I love my Ghastlies quilt! <br />
